A tank is normally used as a starting point in a system to define the source of the fluid and the pressure condition. The pressure in the tank and the elevation of the outlet point from the tank both contribute to give the potential energy of the fluid, which can provide some motive force to create flow.

 

For a pressurized container the outlet pressure is set to the pressure in the container. A suitable icon can be chosen to represent a pressurized container. The icon selected is for visual purposes only. The icon choice does not have any effect on the calculations.


The dimensions of a tank do not need to be specified. It is assumed that the tanks are of infinite size, therefore the flow rate entering and the flow rate leaving a tank do not have to be the same.
